Scholes made his national team debut in England's warm-up match against South Africa in 1997. From 1998 onwards, Scholes slowly replaced Gascoigne as the center of the England national team's midfield, and was touted as Bobby Charlton's successor due to his high scoring rate when he was first selected for the national team. He went on to play for the England national team in the 1998 World Cup, where he was numbered 16 and scored a goal in the tournament. After the World Cup, he became a permanent starter and the inevitable owner of the No. 8 shirt.
He was England's starting front man at the 2000 UEFA European Championship and the 2002 World Cup, and at the 2004 UEFA European Championship, he formed an attacking midfield line with Shearer, David Beckham and Frank Lampard, and Scholes scored the last goal of his national team career in the group stage of the tournament against Croatia, which he helped the team to win 4-2. Scholes retired from the England national team at the end of 2004, but continued to play for Manchester United before announcing his retirement from the club in 2013.
