Rooney began his playing career at Everton and was promoted to the first team in 2002 at the age of 16. He scored eight goals in nine matches in the warm-up games before the start of the 2002/03 season. Rooney made his debut on August 17, 2002 at home to Tottenham Hotspur, kicking off Everton's 100th anniversary in the top flight, and became Everton's youngest ever goalscorer when he scored twice late in the League Cup against Wrexham on October 1. He came on as a late substitute against Arsenal on October 19, and fired in a long shot from 25 yards out towards the end. Rooney's goal not only made Everton beat Arsenal 2-1, ending the opponent's 30-game unbeaten record, but also broke the record of the youngest player to score a goal in the Premier League, shocking England. Rooney agreed to sign a three-year contract on his 17th birthday, and on February 13, 2003 he signed his first professional contract, ending his £90-a-week apprenticeship.
