Terry was selected for the Under-21 national team and participated as captain in the European Under-21 Youth Football Championships.
Terry had already established himself as a starter after representing England at the 2004 UEFA European Nations Cup, and was selected for the 2006 World Cup, where he played in all five matches, but England finished in the last eight of the tournament. Terry was selected as one of the 23 best players in the tournament, and was the only one to receive a positive review of his performance. McClaren became the leader of the team and appointed Terry as the captain of the England national team after David Beckham. However, on February 6, 2010, Terry's extramarital affair caused a stir in England, and the England national team decided to remove Terry from the captaincy of the national team and replace him with vice-captain Rio Ferdinand. But a year later, Terry re-captained the national team.
