Ferdinand's international career

Ferdinand's national team performance

Ferdinand made his England debut on November 15, 1997, at the age of 19 years and 8 days, when he was sent on as a reserve in a friendly against Cameroon, making him England's youngest international defender at the time (a record that was broken in 2006 by Mika Richards). After a successful season in 1997-98, Ferdinand was selected for the 1998 World Cup, but he failed to make the squad for the 2000 UEFA European Championships.

After moving to Leeds United, Ferdinand was immediately recognized by then manager Peter Taylor, who started the friendly against Italy[23] and was subsequently replaced by manager Sven Jörg-Alexander, who also valued Ferdinand, and saw him as England's first choice at centre-back in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cup squads. In the 2009-10 season, Ferdinand missed many club matches due to back and groin injuries, but was selected in time for the 2010 World Cup; however, he suffered a serious knee ligament injury in his first training session with the national team after arriving in South Africa, forcing him to pull out of the tournament early.

Although, Ferdinand has been named in England's World Cup squad in the past (not being fielded in 1998), he has never played in a UEFA European Football Championship tournament (due to missing a drug test suspension and England's failure to qualify for the 2008 final week). As of June 2010, Ferdinand has represented his country 78 times, joining Ashley Cole and John Barnes among the black men who have represented England the most times.
