Cole made his debut for England on March 28, 2001 against Albania. In May 2005, he reached 40 appearances, although he has not scored for the national team. He was named in the star-studded squad for the 2004 UEFA Nations Cup and was one of four England players to be selected. He was also a member of the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad and played five matches for England, but exited in the last eight against Portugal.
In June 2010, Cole made four appearances for England in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, helping England reach the one-eighth final.
