With Germany's marquee manager Tuchel officially taking over the England reins, a competition for the goalkeeper position has quietly kicked off. According to Telegraph reporter Matt Law, current starting goalkeeper Pickford is facing a battle to keep his place in order to become England's undisputed No. 1 for the 2026 World Cup under new boss Tuchel.
Tuchel will officially begin his England coaching career on January 1, while Pickford will be under immediate pressure to prove his mettle to the German. Pickford has been England's first-choice goalkeeper since the 2018 World Cup and has made 71 appearances for England under the staunch support of former boss Gareth Southgate. However, after England's loss to Greece, interim manager Lee Carsley replaced Pickford with Dean Henderson for the UEFA Europa League match against Finland due to his poor performance.
Tuchel will assess England with a fresh perspective and will not let past performances dictate his choices. He made it clear that he is prepared to make tough decisions in order to win the 2026 World Cup. The former Chelsea boss emphasized that they will be looking for the best combination of players and not simply the 24 best individuals. This also means that goalkeepers such as Pickford, Henderson, Pope and hopefully Ramsdale, who is hoping for another call-up, will face stiff competition.
There have also been claims that Tuchel wants Chelsea's goalkeeping coach Hilario to work part-time on his England coaching staff, but Chelsea had not been contacted as of Thursday afternoon. However, James Melbourne, who was Chelsea's head of performance analysis, is expected to join Tuchel's coaching staff. Tuchel has also confirmed that he will make a number of further appointments following the hiring of Anthony Barry as an assistant, resulting in a small behind-the-scenes team.
For Pickford, this is undoubtedly a huge challenge. But he also knows that only through continuous efforts and performance can he prove himself in front of the new manager and thus keep his place in the England team.
