When was La Liga founded?
La Liga was founded in 1928.
In 1928, the first Spanish First Division Football League was officially born, which was jointly organized by various regional football associations in Spain. The first 10 teams were Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Espanyol, Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, Atléticos, Real Unión de Irán, Atlético Santander and Deportivo La Coruña, and Barcelona won the first trophy since the establishment of La Liga in the 1928/1929 season.
The format and rules of the Liga MX are as follows:
Participating Teams:
There are 20 teams participating in the Spanish First Division. These 20 teams are the best soccer clubs in Spain, including famous teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. There are 3 teams that have participated in all the seasons of La Liga so far: Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao.
Tournament rounds:
A double round-robin system is adopted, i.e. each team plays the other teams twice as home and away. A total of 38 rounds of 10 matches each are played in a season.
Points Rules:
In a single game, the winner receives 3 points, the loser receives 0 points, and a tie scores 1 point for each team. At the end of the season, teams are ranked according to their accumulated points.
Ranking Rules:
If there are two teams with the same number of points, the goal difference (i.e., goals scored minus goals conceded) in direct matches between the two teams is compared first; if they are still the same, the total goal difference in the league is compared; and if they are still the same, they are ranked according to the number of goals scored.
If three or more teams have the same number of points, the number of points scored in direct matches between the teams will be compared; if they are the same, the goal difference between the teams in direct matches will be counted; then the total goal difference of the league will be compared; and finally the teams will be ranked according to the number of goals scored.
European qualification:
The top four teams in the league qualify for the group stage of the following season's Champions League.
The fifth-placed team in the league and the Copa del Rey winner participate in the group stage of the Europa League the following season. If the Copa del Rey winners have already qualified for the UEFA Champions League or Europa League in La Liga, the places are extended to the higher-ranked team in La Liga that has not yet qualified for European competition.
The team that finishes sixth in the league competes in the UEFA Europa League play-offs the following season.
Elevation rules:
At the end of the Liga MX, the last three teams in the standings are automatically relegated to the following year's second division, while the top three teams from that year's second division are promoted to the following year's first division.
