NBA Playoff System

NBA playoff rules

The NBA playoffs are organized as follows:

Determination of participating teams:

Direct Entry Teams: The NBA is divided into the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, each with 15 teams. At the end of the regular season, the top 6 teams in each conference, based on their winning percentage, qualify directly for the playoffs.

Play-in teams: In each conference, the four teams that finished 7th through 10th in the regular season compete in a play-in game for the final two playoff spots.

Extra game rules:

FIRST ROUND GAME: The 7th place team and the 8th place team play a game, with the winning team advancing to the playoffs as the 7th seed.

SECOND ROUND PLAYOFFS: The 9th place team and the 10th place team play one game, with the winner playing the loser of the 7th and 8th place games in another game, with the winner of this game advancing to the playoffs as the 8th seed.

Playoff regular season matchup rules:

FIRST ROUND: In the first round of the playoffs, the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference plays the No. 8 team, the No. 2 team plays the No. 7 team, the No. 3 team plays the No. 6 team, and the No. 4 team plays the No. 5 team; the Western Conference follows the same matchups to determine the first-round matchups.

Subsequent rounds: In the Divisional Semifinals, the four teams that won the first round will face off against each other, with the winners of the 1st and 8th place games playing the winners of the 4th and 5th place games, and the winners of the 2nd and 7th place games playing the winners of the 3rd and 6th place games; and in the Divisional Finals, the teams that won the Divisional Semifinals will face off against each other to determine the Eastern Conference Champion and the Western Conference Champion, respectively.

FINAL: The Eastern and Western champions will meet in the finals for championship honors.

Match Racing:

Number of games and advancement criteria: Each series in the playoffs is a best-of-seven series, meaning that the first team to win four games advances to the next round. This means that the maximum number of games that can be played in each round is seven, while the minimum number of games that can be played in each round is four.

Home and Away Arrangement: In a seven-game, four-win series, a "2-2-1-1-1" home and away allocation is used. The team with home field advantage will play Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 on its home field and Games 3, 4, and 6 on the opponent's home field. Home field advantage is usually determined by a team's winning percentage in the regular season, with teams with a higher winning percentage having more home games in the playoffs.
