Originally playing for Sevilla in the mid-tier of La Liga, Reyes was suddenly acquired by English Premier League club Arsenal in 2004 for a transfer fee of 10.5 million pounds. In fact, Reyes scored an own goal in his second game with Arsenal, and later claimed publicly that he could not adapt to the English environment. Arsenal finally sent Reyes on loan to La Liga giants Real Madrid for the 2006-07 season.
During his year at Real Madrid, Reyes was plagued by injuries and had to switch to the right midfield position which he was not very good at, which limited his performance and he was never able to return to his previous performance in La Liga. However, he won back the hearts of the fans in the last week of the league. He came on as a late substitute in the second half and scored two goals in a row, helping Real Madrid beat Barcelona in the last week with the same points but with a better head-to-head result, and regained the league title that had been lost for 4 years. He did not return to England at the end of the season and joined Atletico Madrid in Madrid, where he spent the 2008/09 season on loan at Portuguese Premier League side Benfica. Towards the end of his career, Reyes played for Chinese League One side Xinjiang Tianshan Snow Leopard. He last played for Liga B club Extremadura during his lifetime.
On June 1, 2019, the car Reyes was driving in his hometown of Utrera suffered a presumed tire blowout at 111-128 km/h, lost control of the vehicle, and spun off the roadway, eventually falling down a slope, crashing and catching fire. Reyes and his cousin, who was traveling in the car, were killed together, while another passenger suffered burns to 60% of his body and was taken to the intensive care unit of the hospital for treatment.
