The FA recently announced the appointment of Tuchel as the new England manager on an 18-month contract. In response to the appointment, Three Lions' legendary goalscorer Alan Shearer gave his views in his personal column.
Shearer said the 18-month contract clearly points to one goal - winning the World Cup. He pointed out that this was an achievement that England had failed to achieve for nearly 60 years, and that the FA had brought in Tuchel to fill that gap and bring a major trophy to the team.
Shearer believes that Tuchel's role in the England team will be different from that of former manager Southgate. Southgate was not only in charge of the national team, but also oversaw the England representative teams at all levels and took on many other duties. Tuchel, on the other hand, has a much clearer mandate, which is to lead England to win the World Cup.
Shearer mentioned that the EFL likely emphasized to Tuchel the current strengths of the team when they brought him in and said that he was brought in to win trophies. He emphasized that although the EFL had the same expectations when bringing in previous names such as Capello and Eriksson, it was no guarantee of winning the title.
Shearer spoke highly of Tuchel's coaching ability. He believes that Tuchel has an incredible coaching experience and has won trophies wherever he has gone, even the biggest ones. Shearer said that he genuinely wants Tuchel to succeed with England, but also knows that this will need to be proven through time.
