What did the Oklahoma City Thunder used to be called?
The Oklahoma City Thunder were formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics.
The Seattle Supersonics were founded in 1966 and joined the National Basketball Association (NBA). In their 41 seasons in Seattle, the Supersonics had a successful career, posting the first 50+ win season in franchise history in 1978-79 and winning their first NBA Championship. The team also made several playoff appearances and produced such notable players as Gary Payton and Ray Allen.
In 2006, Howard Schultz sold the Supersonics to a team of Oklahoma City investors led by Clay Bennett for $350 million, and in 2008, the Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City and changed their name to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The move drew the ire of Seattle fans, but the team's relocation and name change eventually materialized.
