2026 World Cup Line-Up Rules
Allocation of places for the 2026 World Cup
The distribution of 2026 World Cup qualifying places by continent is as follows:
Europe: UEFA has been awarded 16 direct World Cup berths. The first round of the tournament will be organized into 12 groups of 4-5 teams, with the top group earning direct qualification to the World Cup. The remaining four spots will be determined in a 16-team UEFA play-off, which includes the 12 group runners-up and the four highest-ranked UEFA Nations League champions.
South America: The South American Football Confederation (CONCACAF) has been awarded nine direct World Cup berths and one additional berth in the play-offs. A total of 10 teams will compete in the South American qualifying rounds, with each country playing home and away matches against the other nine. 18 The top six teams after the rounds will qualify for the World Cup, with the seventh-placed team playing in the FIFA play-offs.
Asia: 8.5 seats for AFC. The process is divided into four stages:
In the first stage, teams ranked 27 to 46 in Asia were drawn into a home-and-away tournament, with the 10 winners advancing to the second stage.
In the second stage, 36 teams (previously ranked 1-26 + 10 teams from the first stage) were divided into 9 groups of 4 teams each, playing a double round-robin of home and away matches, with the top two teams from each group, totaling 18 teams, advancing to the third stage, and these 18 teams qualifying directly for the 2027 Asian Cup final round.
In the third stage, the 18 teams are divided into three groups of six teams each, playing a double round-robin tournament of home and away matches, with the top two teams in each group qualifying directly for the World Cup.
In the fourth stage, the third and fourth-placed teams from the third stage groups, totaling six teams, are again divided into two groups of three teams each for a single round-robin tournament, with the top teams from each group qualifying directly. In the fifth stage, the second place finishers of the two groups in the fourth stage play a home and away playoff, with the winners qualifying for the World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs and competing with teams from other continents for a place in the World Cup.
AFRICA: The CAF has been awarded nine direct World Cup berths and one place in the play-offs. The African qualifiers, which total 54 teams, are divided into nine groups playing a round-robin system of home and away matches, with the winner of each group automatically qualifying for the World Cup and the best four runners-up competing in a play-off stage for a further play-off berth.
North and Central America and the Caribbean: Since Canada, Mexico and the United States are the hosts and automatically qualify for the World Cup, the qualifying round allocates three direct qualifiers for the World Cup and two for the play-offs. The four lowest-ranked teams in the region played home and away matches, with the winners advancing to the second round. In the second round, a total of 30 teams are divided into six groups of five teams each. The group winners and runners-up (12 teams in total) advance to the final round. In the final round, the 12 countries are divided into 3 groups of 4 teams each, with the winners of the three groups qualifying directly for the World Cup and the two second-placed teams qualifying for the FIFA play-offs.
Oceania: The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) receives one direct qualification for the World Cup and one place in the play-offs. In the first round, the four lowest-ranked countries compete in the first qualifying round and advance to the second round. In the second round, the four lowest-ranked countries compete in the first round of qualifying for the second round of the tournament. In the third round, the four teams advance to the semifinals and finals, with the winner qualifying directly for the World Cup and the runner-up for the FIFA Play-Offs.
The FIFA play-offs will see two teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean and one each from Asia, Africa, South America and Oceania compete for the final two places in the World Cup.
