Ahead of the home match against Chelsea in the 8th round of the English Premier League, Liverpool's official website has released an op-ed by manager Sloter in the matchday field magazine. In the article, Slotter expresses his anticipation for the upcoming match, as well as an in-depth analysis of his team's performance and the challenges ahead.
Slotter began by reflecting on his team's performances ahead of October's International Day, particularly the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, which made it nine wins out of 10 matches since he took over the Reds. He emphasized that despite this success, the team still needs to remain vigilant and work hard against tough opponents like Chelsea.
"Chelsea are one of the strongest opponents we've faced so far," writes Slaughter, "They've made a good start to the season and have had some very good results in their games. It's no surprise because Chelsea have a lot of good players and they played well last season."
Slaughter described the game as not only a "big test" but also a "big opportunity". He emphasized that the team has been improving since preseason, trying to ingrain a supportive approach to the way the game is played and constantly challenging itself to get better in every aspect of the game.
At the same time, Slaughter also pointed out the challenges the team faces in terms of gelling the squad. With many of the players not returning until the end of July and the beginning of August, having played in the summer's international matches, the team has had less than three months to gel with a full squad. Nonetheless, Slaughter is very encouraged by the points the team has achieved in a short space of time and believes it sets the team up for further development in the coming weeks and months.
In goal, Sloter said there would be adjustments as top goalkeeper Alisson was out with a muscle injury. He praised the strength and attitude of stand-in goalkeeper Kelleher, saying that he did a great job on his debut. Slotter emphasized that injuries to players are inevitable in any Premier League season, so it is important to have players with strength and good attitude like Kelleher.
Finally, Slaughter re-emphasized the importance of the team's need to keep improving against strong opponents. He said that as a head coach, he is always striving for perfection, and despite knowing that perfection is practically unattainable, the team needs to keep working hard in order to achieve better results in future matches.
