Koscielny was born in Thiele, France. He started his career at French Ligue 2 side Gambon Forward in 2004. During his three years at Gambon Forward, he played 47 matches, mainly as a right back.
Koscielny moved to another French Ligue 2 side, Douas, in 2007 and switched to center back. After switching to the center back position, he was able to improve his tackling ability and defensive position, resulting in him receiving only 3 yellow cards in the whole season. In the 2008-09 season, Koscielny made 34 league appearances and scored 5 goals, and was eventually named to the Ligue 2 team of the season.
On June 19, 2009, Lorient, a newly promoted team in the French Ligue 1, signed Koscielny on a four-year deal for 1.7 million euros.
On June 7, 2010, Arsenal officially announced the signing of Koscielny, who will wear the number 6 shirt left behind by Senderos, as manager Arsene Wenger hopes that Koscielny can improve the team's short height and lack of central defenders.On July 14, 2012, Koscielny signed a long-term contract with Arsenal.
On March 26, 2022, Koscielny announced he was hanging up his boots.
