Derbyshire entered the youth system of Ligue 1 club Lille at the age of eight and after ten years of training was finally able to become a member of the main team.
He made his debut for Lille at the age of 18 on January 31, 2004 against Metz in Ligue 1, scored his first goal against Bordeaux in Ligue 1 on January 15, 2005, and tore his knee ligaments against Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on March 25, 2006, which required him to undergo surgery and to recover for more than six months before he could return to action.
The 2010/11 Ligue 1 season was Derbyshire's most successful at the club, as Lille won both the Ligue 1 and French Cup.
On January 4, 2013, Derbyshire moved to English Premier League club Newcastle for an undisclosed fee of around £5.5 million. He made his debut for the team on January 12 against Norwich City.
On July 17, 2014, Debji moved to Arsenal for an undisclosed transfer fee, which has been suggested to be around £12 million, with shirt number 2, while Abou Diaby, who originally wore the number 2 shirt, switched to number 24 instead.
With few appearances at Arsenal, Dibrugge moved to Ligue 1 club Bordeaux on loan in January 2016 before moving to St Etienne in January 2018. in 2021 he joined Valenciennes.
