Derbyshire entered the youth system of Ligue 1 club Lille at the age of eight and after ten years of training was finally able to become a member of the main team.

He made his debut for Lille at the age of 18 on January 31, 2004 against Metz in Ligue 1, scored his first goal against Bordeaux in Ligue 1 on January 15, 2005, and tore his knee ligaments against Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on March 25, 2006, which required him to undergo surgery and to recover for more than six months before he could return to action.

The 2010/11 Ligue 1 season was Derbyshire's most successful at the club, as Lille won both the Ligue 1 and French Cup.
