Lizarazu's playing career
Lizarazu's playing days
Lizarazu is of Basque origin and his real name Bixente Lizarazu is of Basque origin. Having lived for many years in southwestern France, where the Basque community lives, his first club was Bordeaux FC, a southwestern French club. Lizarazu played in Spain for Athletic Bilbao, a Basque-based La Liga club.
In 1997, he joined the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, which was the most glorious era in Lizarazu's career. At that time, Bayern dominated the Bundesliga and won several Bundesliga championships (1999, 2000, 2001), and even won the UEFA Europa League Champions League in 2001, which was Lizarazu's best achievement in the club's awards. He also represented the French national team to win the 1998 World Cup, and two years later won the 2000 UEFA Nations Cup, becoming the only national team in Europe to win both the World Cup and the UEFA Nations Cup in succession, and helping Bayern Munich to win the UEFA Champions League title and the Toyota Cup with the benefit of the UEFA European Championships.
Although Lizarazu's standards declined in the later stages of his career, he still won three Bundesliga titles (2003, 2005, 2006). He originally returned to France in 2004 to join Marseille, but returned to Bayern six months later before announcing his retirement half a year later. He announced his departure from the national team after playing in the 2004 UEFA Nations Cup.
