Griezmann's childhood

Griezmann's soccer development as a youngster

Griezmann was born in an apartment in the commune of Macon, Saône-et-Loire, France. His father, Alain, a municipal councillor, was also from the Alsace region, so his surname has Germanic roots along with fellow Alsatian and national teammate Morgan Schniederlin, while his mother, Isabelle, was Portuguese and his maternal grandfather, Amaro Lopes, was a Portuguese-born soccer player who played for Ferreira Pacos. His maternal grandfather and grandmother settled in France in 1957 for work and gave birth to his mother in France; his grandfather died in his infancy (1992). As a child, Griezmann used to spend his vacations in Ferreira de Pacos.

Griezmann began his career with his hometown team UF Merken. There, Griezmann had several tryouts, with the club rejecting him because he was too short and too light.

In 2005, during a trial with Montpellier, Griezmann played in a friendly match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Paris youth academy, which was visited by scouts from clubs of different countries. He impressed several clubs with his performance, notably Spanish club Real Sociedad. During the tournament, club officials offered Griezmann a one-week trial at San Sebastian, which he gladly accepted. He later stayed with the club for two more weeks. Finally, Real Sociedad then officially contacted Griezmann's parents and offered him a contract as a youth player. Griezmann's parents initially refused to allow Griezmann to move to Spain due to factors such as habits and language, but ultimately made concessions in order to allow Griezmann to develop better.
