In a recent interview, Liverpool captain Van Dyke confirmed that he is in talks with the club to extend his contract. The 33-year-old Dutch international has been in fine form this season, leading Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and conceding just three goals in eight games.
Van Dyke's current contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the season, but Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is in active talks with his agent over an extension, according to The Athletic. Van Dyke said in the interview, "I can say that obviously negotiations are ongoing but I don't know what the future holds, we'll see. I'm totally focused on Liverpool at the moment, focused on winning the next games and not thinking about anything else apart from that."
Van Dyke is very confident about his form, saying, "I feel very good, physically, mentally and I'm enjoying the game. The people involved are negotiating and when it's time to make a decision, you [the media] will know about it. But right now, my whole energy and focus is on Liverpool and the goal is to be successful this season."
On Liverpool's upcoming tight schedule, Van Dyke said he was looking forward to it: "It's a very tough run of fixtures, on top of traveling on the road a lot, and the key is to stay fit and keep the tempo up, and I'm looking forward to it. That's what you want - you want to play at the highest level against the best teams and show what you can do. So let's go for the win."
In addition, Van Dyke praised Curtis Jones, who had a great game against Chelsea: "It was a very good game for him personally. Of course, becoming a father for the first time was a big moment for him and I'm glad everything went well. That's the most important thing and then he was also the man of the match. Although Van Dyke has not explicitly guaranteed that he will still be at Anfield next season, a contract extension is very much on the cards judging by his statements. Liverpool, for their part, are also keen to lock the symbolic captain up for another two to three years as he remains a top player and shows no signs of a dip in form.
