Former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo has revealed that he regretted missing out on the opportunity to help Chelsea sign Aguero, while taking part in a podcast. Emenalo said that Chelsea were very close to signing the Argentine striker, and that their original plan was to partner the 20-year-old Aguero with Didier Drogba and gradually replace him as the new centerpiece of the team.
It is reported that in November 2009, Chelsea met Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, and Aguero came on as a substitute in that game and scored a last minute equalizer, which drew a lot of attention from Chelsea. However, despite the interest Chelsea showed in Aguero, the deal did not work out in the end.
Aguero also touched on the matter in a later interview, stating that he spent three years at Atletico Madrid, loved the Premier League and wanted to play there. However, after that, Chelsea never showed interest in him again. Eventually, Aguero joined Manchester City in 2011 and grew to become a legend in the team.
For Chelsea, missing out on signing Aguero is undoubtedly a huge regret. Aguero's signing could have added more firepower to Chelsea's forward line, and his outstanding performance could have helped Chelsea achieve more honors in the Premier League and Europe. However, history cannot be changed, and Chelsea can only hope for the future and continue to look for and develop more outstanding players to lay a solid foundation for the team's future.
