Lahm represented Germany at the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He made his national team debut on February 18, 2004 in a friendly match between Germany and Croatia. Since then, Lahm has made 30 appearances for Germany, scoring two goals. He scored his first goal for the national team on April 28, 2004, in a friendly match between Germany and Romania. Shortly afterward, Lahm was named to the Germany 2004 UEFA Nations Cup squad coached by Wöller; he had a strong showing at the tournament, and along with Ballack was considered to be the best German player in the competition. However, Germany failed to win any of their three group stage matches and returned home early. After that, Lahm was often plagued by injuries and was unable to regain his best form for a long time.
At the 2006 World Cup, Lahm was trusted by then Germany manager Jurgen Klinsmann and was an absolute mainstay of the German team at left back. He scored the first goal of the tournament. In the opening match against Costa Rica, he assisted in the sixth minute of the first half, won the ball on the left side, swung the ball around eighteen yards from the goal, flashed openings, and then curled the ball with his right foot into the top right corner of the goal. This was the only goal Lahm scored in the World Cup. He then traveled with Germany all the way to the quarterfinals, finishing third. He became the only member of the German team to play all 690 minutes of the tournament. As a result of his outstanding performance, Lahm was named to the FIFA 2006 World Cup All-Star Team and the UEFA 2006 Team of the Year, and was shortlisted for the 2006 World Footballer of the Year.
Lahm also played as an absolute mainstay in the 2008 UEFA European Championships and played brilliantly. In the semi-final match between Germany and Turkey, Lahm broke through from the left in the 90th minute of the match, made a two-on-one with his teammates, and then calmly scored the ball in front of the opponent's goalkeeper. This goal helped Germany to advance to the final with a 3:2 victory over their opponents. He was also named in the best team of the tournament.
In the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Lahm was the only player to play a full game in all competitions. On the eve of the final week, national team coach Löw announced that Lahm would become the new captain of the national team after former national team captain Lukas Barak withdrew due to an injury, and led the team to another top-three finish at the World Cup in South Africa.
In the 2014 World Cup, Lahm once again played as Germany's national captain, and eventually led his team to win the World Cup, receiving the Hercules Cup, medals and $35 million in prize money from Lydia Bai and Rousseff.On July 18, 2014, Lahm announced his retirement from the national team, ending his career with the national team.
