Ballack's national team career
Ballack's first major tournament for Germany was Euro 2000, where the German team performed poorly, packing out early with a draw and two losses in the group stage.
Ballack officially came to prominence in the 2002 World Cup, when he became the soul of Germany's offense, leading the team to the final with three goals and four assists (this is the official record group figure, while ESPN's record group recognizes it as three goals and six assists). However, Ballack received his second yellow card of the tournament in the semi-final against South Korea, and was suspended for the final, resulting in a 0-2 loss to Brazil.
At Euro 2004, Germany underperformed, with only Ballack playing up to par, and ended up packing it in at the group stage, and he and Italy's Zambrotta were the only two players from that tournament to make the All-Star team after finishing out of the group.
In the 2006 World Cup, as the captain of the national team, Ballack started 5 matches and led the team to beat strong teams such as Sweden and Argentina following the 92 European Championships and 90 World Cup, and finally won the third place. Although he did not score any goals, his performance proved that he was already the absolute soul of the German national team.
At Euro 2008, Ballack led Germany all the way to the final as captain and core player. Unfortunately, they lost 0-1 to Spain in the final and finished second.
Ballack was shanked by Kevin Boateng in the 2009~10 FA Cup final in England, and after examination it was confirmed that he had torn ligaments in his right ankle, and would not play in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Eight weeks after recovering from his injury, Ballack was not selected for the German national team, even though the German Football Association (DFB) arranged two extra friendly matches for him to complete the milestone of 100 national team appearances, both of which were rejected by Ballack as farcical, and did not take part in the commemorative match that Germany had set up in his honor on Aug. 11, 2011 (Germany vs. Brazil) to show their displeasure with Löw.
Although Ballack did not help Germany win any of the pennants, but in this period of his performance is quite outstanding, 2002 ~ 08 four consecutive tournaments in the All-Star team is the same period of the unique achievement of the whole of Europe, look at the history of the European only he and the other two German captains Beckenbauer (1970 ~ 76) and Lahm (2006 ~ 12) three reached, is undoubtedly the 21st century, one of the most outstanding players in the early days. He is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding players of the early 21st century.
