Schweinsteiger joined the Bayern Munich youth team on July 1, 1998, and won the U-19 Bundesliga title in 2002, and his recognition gradually increased. In July of the same year, he officially became a member of the Bayern Munich second team, mainly playing as a left back.
In November 2002, Bayern Munich against Lens in the UEFA Europa League match, manager Hitzfeld arranged 18-year-old Schweinsteiger backup on the field, Schweinsteiger succeeded in creating goals for his teammates, and has since become a regular player of Bayern Munich, and made 14 appearances in the 2002-03 season, assisting Bayern Munich to win the triple crown.
On August 15, 2008, Schweinsteiger scored his first goal of the 2008-09 season.In December 2010, Schweinsteiger renewed his contract with Bayern Munich until 2016.
On July 11, 2015, Manchester United officially announced that Schweinsteiger joined the team. The transfer fee was not released to the public and is speculated to be around £6.52 million, with an expected annual salary of €10 million, signing for three years and working with former Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal again.
On March 21, 2017, United announced that Schweinsteiger had joined the Chicago Fire as a free agent, and on April 1, he made his league debut, scoring his first MLS goal against the Montreal Impact in a 2-2 draw. In the middle of the season, Schweinsteiger helped the Chicago Fire to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference standings, was named to the MLS All-Star team along with teammate Nemanja Nikolic, and captained the All-Star team in the 2017 MLS All-Star Game against Real Madrid. After helping the Chicago Fire return to the playoffs, Schweinsteiger was given a contract option for the following year.
On October 8, 2019, Schweinsteiger announced his retirement.
