Malouda started to play for the French national team in 2004, with his excellent performances for Lyon, the first match being against Poland. By the 2006 World Cup he was already in the starting lineup, and put in a great performance for France to reach the final, eventually finishing as the runner-up. After the 2008 UEFA Nations Cup, Malouda lost his place in the squad after publicly criticizing the manager. He did not make it into the French national team after the 2012 UEFA Nations Cup.
In 2017, Malouda decided to play for French Guiana, where he was born, in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, but CONCACAF ruled that Malouda could not play for French Guiana due to FIFA's rule of "prohibiting a player from playing for two federation teams". However, French Guiana ignored the ruling and played Malouda in the match against Honduras. After the match, CONCACAF ruled that Honduras had won the match 0-3 because French Guiana had sent in an ineligible player. Malouda appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CISA) on the grounds that "French Guiana is not a member of FIFA", and on April 19, 2018, the CISA rejected Malouda's appeal.
