Although born in Lyon, Abidal did not start his early years with the big club Lyon, but first came from another club, Monaco, and then played for Lille before moving to Lyon in 2004. Lyon have won six consecutive Ligue 1 titles since 2001, including three in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07, in which Abidal was also involved.
Abidal was selected to play for the national team back in 2004, and he played in all the final round matches of the 2006 World Cup, including the final where he lost to Italy on penalties.
