Schneider joined the small club Aufbau Jena (now SV Lobeda 77) in 1980, and three years later moved to Carl Zeiss Jena at the age of nine. On August 13, 1991, Schneider made his debut in the Bundesliga at the age of seventeen, having been promoted from the youth ranks of the Carl Zeiss Jena first team. He played 124 matches for Carl Zeiss Jena in the Bundesliga and scored 14 goals.
