Batts' national team career
Born in the southern French city of La Voraine, Barthez is a French soccer player and one of the best goalkeepers in world soccer. He plays as a goalkeeper. Barthez played for the French national soccer team, winning the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 UEFA European Championship, as well as two league titles for Manchester United.
Barthez made his debut for the French national team against Australia on May 26, 1994, and didn't have many selection opportunities in his early years. It was at the 1998 World Cup that he really made a name for himself, when he won the World Cup for the national team on home soil. Batts only conceded two goals in seven matches, tying the record of former England goalkeeper Peter Schluden, and won the Yassin Award at that World Cup. Since then he has been in the limelight and many clubs have started to offer the goalkeeper. Barthez's teammate, defender Laurent Blanc, kissed his bald head for good luck before every match, and it became a popular story before they joined Manchester United.
In 2000, Barthez helped the team win the UEFA European Championships as a regular. 2002 World Cup and 2004 UEFA European Championships, Barthez also played, but the team went out in the quarterfinals and the last 8 respectively. Barthez was also selected for the national team in the 2006 World Cup, but was defeated by Italy in the final of the tournament, and finished second. Barthez also announced his retirement from the national team.
