Vertold's career
In his early years, Wiltord mainly played for French clubs Rennes and Bordeaux. He had already made a name for himself at Bordeaux, and was selected to play for the French national team in the 2000 UEFA Nations Cup in 1999. The French team made it to the final against Italy, scoring a goal to equalize in the dying seconds, and helping the national team to win the UEFA Nations Cup.
Wiltord had moved to the Premier League to join Arsenal and was mainly a winger at the club. He won the 2001-02 Premier League title for Arsenal. With a number of famous players already in the squad such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pirre and Frédéric Yonberg, Wiltord has always played behind them in an irregular starting position. At the end of his contract in 2004, he returned to France to join Lyon. At the time, Lyon had won five consecutive Ligue 1 titles, two of which (2004-05, 2005-06) Wiltord helped with.
Wiltord has represented his country over 90 times so far, attending major tournaments including the 2002 World Cup, the 2004 European Championships and the 2006 World Cup, where France once again met Italy in the final of the 2006 edition, but this time lost to Italy to finish as runners-up.
After losing his starting berth due to age, he returned to his parent club Rennes in 2007. 2009 saw Wiltord move to Marseille, where he played for half a season. In 2009, Wiltord moved to Marseille for half a season, then went into hiding for a while, before making a comeback in 2010 to join Metz in Ligue 2 until the end of the season, and then joining Nantes for a year in 2011.
