Hamann first grew up in the German market town of Königsreiter until 1976, when his family moved to Munich. As a youth player he came from Wacker in Munich before joining the youth team of the German champions Bayern Munich. After making 106 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich in 1998, Hamann moved to Newcastle United in the English Premier League for £5.5 million. A year later he moved to another Premier League club, Liverpool, for £8 million. In 2006 Hamann briefly joined Bolton before moving to Manchester City as a free agent, where he played for three years before being dropped. After a one-season break, he joined League One club Milton Keynes in the summer of 2010 on a one-year contract as a player and coach.
