Unlike other famous German players, Bierhoff was a late starter and only played for small clubs in Germany, and never won any awards in the German First Division. Having scored 37 goals in 70 appearances for the national team, Bierhoff was not selected for the German national team until 1996 at the age of 27.
Bierhoff played with the German national team in the 1996 UEFA European Football Championships, always as a reserve. In the final, Germany only had 16 players in net for various reasons, and with the Czech Republic trailing by one goal, manager Fogetz was determined to bring in Bierhoff, who scored two goals in a row to win the match.
