Ziegel started his career in the small German clubs before joining Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga in 1990, where he made a name for himself. He won his first Bundesliga title as early as 1994, the UEFA Nations Cup in England and a Bundesliga title in 1997.
In 1997, Italian club AC Milan suffered their worst performance in a decade and acquired Ziggy from Bayern. After two seasons of failure to adapt to the club's style of play, AC Milan finally won the Serie A title in 1999, but Ziggy didn't make much of a contribution.
In the summer of 1999 Ziggy traveled to the Premier League to play for Middlesbrough. He returned to form and played 29 league matches in one season. However, after the season, Ziggy was recruited by Liverpool, a big club in the Premier League, and Ziggy fell out with Middlesbrough in order to get a transfer. After his move to Liverpool, Ziggy's performance was unsatisfactory, only contributing to the English League Cup. He lost his place in the team in the second half of the season. Ziggy moved to another Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur, in 2001. He was initially a regular in the starting lineup, however, injuries plagued him and his playing time dwindled.
In 2004 he returned to Germany to play for Borussia Mönchengladbach and stayed with the club after his retirement.
Ziggy was a mainstay of the national team as early as 1993 and has represented the national team in several major tournaments, including the 1996 UEFA Nations Cup, which he won, and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he was runner-up; he retired from playing in the UEFA Nations Cup in 2004.
