Mandzukic's international career
On September 14, 2004, Mandzukic made his debut with the national team for Croatia U-19 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mandzukic performed well in the qualifying rounds of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. He scored his first goal of the qualifiers against Georgia in June 2011, and he scored a header against Latvia in the final game of the qualifiers. Assisting Croatia to second place in the group stage for the play-offs. Croatia faced Turkey in the play-offs. The first round was held in Istanbul, where Croatia overcame the might of Turkey's home fans to beat their opponents 3:0. Among them, Mandzukic scored his second goal for the national team in the 32nd minute of the first half on top.
Mandzukic was Croatia manager Slaven Bilic's first choice up front for the 2012 UEFA European Championships, and he formed the national team's double-arrow alongside Nikica Jelavic, who plays for Everton.
Mandzukic handed out important assists in the initial two matches of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, including against Macedonia in the Croatian capital Zagreb and against Belgium in the city of Brussels. He scored his first goal in qualifying against Wales in Osijek.
Mandzukic was named in Croatia's 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. However, he was unable to play in Croatia's opening match against hosts Brazil on June 12, 2014 due to suspension. He made his official debut in the following match against Cameroon on June 18, where he scored two individual goals to order the national team to a 4:0 victory over their opponents. He was also voted the best player of the tournament.
Mandzukic has been named in Croatia's 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In the final against France although he failed to defend a header from a free kick in the 18th minute and therefore scored an own goal, he later scored for Croatia in the 69th minute by taking advantage of a goalkeeper's oversight. In the end, Croatia won the runner-up.
On August 14, 2018, Mandzukic announced his retirement from the Croatian national team.
