Van Bommel started his playing career as an amateur before joining Dutch club Xueda, where he was transformed from an apprentice to a professional.
In 1999, van Bommel joined the larger Eindhoven, where he won three Dutch First Division titles and the 2001 and 2005 Dutch Footballer of the Year awards. At the time, Van Bommel was already being approached by clubs at all levels in Europe, including Manchester United in the English Premier League and Real Madrid in La Liga, but Van Bommel turned down each offer.
After Van Bommel announced his departure in 2005, he chose to join Barcelona. Van Bommel scored 2 goals in 24 appearances that season, winning the 2006 UEFA Champions League in addition to the La Liga title.
Van Bommel was acquired by Bundesliga club Bayern Munich in 2006 and scored three goals in six appearances. The original captain at the time, Oliver Kahn, retired after the 2007-08 season, and Van Bommel took over wearing the captain's armband, becoming the first ever non-German captain of Bayern Munich.
On January 25, 2011, Van Bommel terminated his contract with Bayern Munich six months early and moved to AC Milan in Serie A on a free transfer, where he immediately helped AC Milan win the Serie A title.
On May 15, 2012, Dutch Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven officially announced that the team has signed 35-year-old Van Bommel from AC Milan on a one-year contract on a free transfer. Right at the end of the season, Van Bommel announced that he was officially retiring from his playing career.
