De Jong's playing career
De Jong chose to join Willem II, a club close to his home, where he spent his youth career. He made his Dutch debut for Willem II on May 10, 2015 against ADO The Hague.
De Jong joined Ajax in the summer of 2015 and was briefly loaned back to Willem II for half a season.
In the middle of the 2016/17 season, De Jong, who was playing for Ajax's youth team at the time, was voted the best rookie in the Dutch Eredivisie.In the second half of the 16/17 season, De Jong, along with his teammates Derek De Richert and Nonni, was promoted to the first-team squad, and came off the bench to play eight minutes in the UEFA Cup final on May 25th.
In the 2017/18 season, De Jong's position was changed from full-back to center-back due to Ajax's shortage of defenders, until Ajax strengthened their full-back position in the winter transfer window.
De Jong became a starter for Ajax in the 2018/19 season, winning the Dutch Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup with the team, and reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League Cup. In the second round of the UEFA Champions League Cup one-eighth final, he put in an excellent performance to hold off Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, defeating Real Madrid 1-4 away from home. At the end of the season, De Jong won the Dutch Football Rookie of the Year Award (Cruyff Award).
On January 24, 2019, La Liga club Barcelona announced the signing of Frenkie de Jong for €75 million, plus a €11 million floating clause, becoming the 20th Dutchman to play for Barcelona.
