As a defender, Van Bronckhorst is not just a fullback, in fact he can play on the left flank or in the center of midfield, but mainly as a left back for both club and country. In addition to this, he is also a very good shot from the outside.

Van Bronckhorst joined the national team in '96 and made 60 appearances, including 2 World Cups and 2 Euros. in '04, he helped the Dutch reach the semi-finals, but ultimately fell to the mighty Portugal. In '06, he qualified for the World Cup, but in the round of 16 against Portugal, he received a red card, in that game, a total of 4 red cards appeared, a world record. Interestingly, after he was sent off, he started chatting with Deco, who had been red-carded earlier in the match, in Portugal, and in Barcelona, face-to-face next to the field. his only goal against Slovenia on March 28, 2007, helped the Netherlands lock up a spot in the 08 European Championships. Since then, Van Bronckhorst followed the Dutch team to the 2008 European Championships, but unfortunately, the Dutch team, which performed well in the group stage, was eliminated by Russia in the last 8 knockout stage. After this year's European Championships, Van der Sar announced his retirement and Van Bronckhorst took over the captaincy.

Van Bronckhorst led the Netherlands to the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and scored first for the Netherlands in the semifinals with a long-range shot from Van Bronckhorst.
