In 1998, Zé Carlos took part in the World Cup campaign as a member of the Brazilian national team. In the crucial semi-final match against the Netherlands, he replaced Cafu, who was unable to play due to suspension, and started at right back, making a great contribution to the team.
In 1997, Zé Carlos quickly made a name for himself at FC Matunis, becoming a permanent starter in the first team. His outstanding performances attracted the attention of São Paulo FC and he subsequently joined the club after one season. With his outstanding play at São Paulo, he was spotted by then Brazilian head coach Zagallo and was given a valuable opportunity to participate in the 1998 World Cup.
In addition to São Paulo, Zé Carlos has played for several clubs such as Gremio, Ponte Preta, Jornvili, etc. In 2005, he ended his career with Real Noroeste.
