
National Team Journey: Glory and Controversy Mixed
Davies has been an indispensable part of the team since the spring of 1994, when he first donned the Netherlands colors. However, this fighter in orange, in his national team career of more than ten years, has never been able to win any international trophies. At the 1996 European Championships, Davies was expelled from the national team for "lack of concentration" by Coach Hiddink because of his outspokenness in a radio interview, and returned to his home country to reflect on his actions. However, four years later on the eve of the World Cup, Hiddink recalled him again. In that World Cup, Davies made a great contribution to the team with his solid defense and aggressive offense.
However, Davies' career has not been smooth sailing. 2000 European Championships, Holland in the penalty shootout against Italy, Davies also failed to escape the fate of the trick. 2004, his performance in the European Cup, although not bad, but the team also failed to break the semi-final of the magic spell.
After the 2004 European Championships, the new head coach, Van Basten, initially had full confidence in Davies and even made him captain at one point. However, Davies soon lost the captaincy due to reduced club appearances and withdrew from the national team that fall. Nevertheless, he still retains the possibility of returning to the national team and has not yet announced his retirement.
