Road to Honor: Van Bommel's legendary journey with the national team

National team debut and first taste of misery

Van Bommel has featured as a member of the national team since the 2000 World Cup qualifier against Cyprus. Unfortunately, the Netherlands failed to qualify for the final of the World Cup. 2004 saw van Bommel miss out on the UEFA Nations Cup due to injury, and it was the 2006 World Cup that really made his mark. Van Bommel played three matches for the Netherlands in that tournament, but was defeated by Portugal in the quarter-finals and unfortunately left the tournament.

Family honor and personal choice

Van Bommel's father-in-law, Van Marwijk, was the head coach of the Dutch national team after 2008, and at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Dutch made it all the way to the final. However, an early exit from Euro 2012 led to van Marwijk's resignation. As his father-in-law, van Bommel also took a lot of flak. At the ripe old age of 35, he chose to bid farewell to the national team, stating, "The Dutch team is everything to me, but I have to make way for younger people with more potential. If the national team needs me in the future, I will never refuse."

Honors added: club and individual achievements

At the club level, Van Bommel has achieved great success. At a number of top clubs, including PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, he won numerous honors, including Dutch Footballer of the Year, Spanish Primera Division Champion, Champions League Champion and more.

Van Bommel's national team career has been equally exciting, as he helped the Netherlands finish as runners-up in the 2010 World Cup. These honors, no doubt, are the best illustration of his career.
