Since the 1998 World Cup, Van Bronckhorst has been an iconic figure in the Dutch national team with his solid style of play. Van Bronckhorst joined the national team as early as 1996 and made 60 appearances, including two World Cups and two Euros.In 2004, he helped the Netherlands reach the semi-finals of the Europa League, only to return home in defeat against Portugal.In 2006, he qualified for the World Cup, only to be red-carded against Portugal in the last 16, one of the all-time red-card records! Unexpectedly, after he was sent off, he started a conversation with his Portuguese teammate, Deco, who he had worked with in Barcelona, and on March 28, 2007, he scored a crucial goal against Slovenia, helping the Netherlands lock up qualification for EURO 08. Despite a strong performance in the group stage of Euro 2008, the Dutch lost to Russia in the knockout stage. Van Bronckhorst has since taken over the captaincy.
In the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, van Bronckhorst's long-range shot opened the scoring for the Netherlands and was the key to that match.
