In German soccer, Christian Werns' name is associated with solid defenses, and in 1999 he joined Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, where he not only captained the team, but also saw them through a brilliant farewell to the 2007/08 season.
Back in 1996, Werns made his debut for Waldhof Mannheim as an underage player at the age of 17 years, 3 months and 30 days, the fourth youngest at the club. The following year, he moved to Leverkusen, where he played alongside such greats as Luhueni, but was never able to reach the Bundesliga title.
In 1998, Vaughns traveled to France to join Paris Saint-Germain, but failed to adapt to the new environment. A year later, he returned to the Bundesliga and joined Borussia Dortmund, where he finally won his first and only Bundesliga title in 2002.
In 2008, after the expiration of his contract, Dortmund did not renew it and Vaughns then announced his retirement.
Despite making over sixty appearances for the German national team, Vaughns was unable to win a single match, and in 1998, after being sent off for a foul that stopped him in the last eight of the World Cup, he opted out of the national team in 2005 after tensions with coach Chilian Schwinn.
In 2002, Vaughns won the German Bundesliga; in 1993, he collected German Cup honors.
