When it comes to the Philippines, I am sure that it will not be unfamiliar to anyone. As our maritime neighbour, we know the Philippines far better than countries such as Afghanistan and Tajikistan, which share a border with us.

Located in the southeastern part of the country, the Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands of various sizes, covering a total area of about 299,700 square kilometers. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the east and the South China Sea in the west. Among them, several large islands, such as Luzon and Mindanao, occupy the vast majority of the Philippine area.

Luzon is the largest island in the Philippines, covering an area of about 110,000 square kilometers, and is one of the main parts of the Philippines, with Manila, the capital, located in the southwest of the island. Luzon is shaped like an octopus swimming freely in the sea, with the northern part being broad, like the head of an octopus, and the southeastern part being narrow and elongated, like the feet of an octopus. To the northwest are the Cordillera Central, to the northeast along the coast are the Sierra Madre, and to the southwest are the Sierra de San Pedro. To the east of the Sierra de San Pedro Reyes is the plains, which are fertile.

Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines with an area of about 94,600 square kilometers. It is wider in the east and slender and elongated in the northwest. Roughly, Mindanao is shaped like a lion with its head facing upwards, with the elongated peninsular strip in the northwest resembling the lion's tail. To the southeast and due south, there is an elongated strip that resembles the lion's legs.

The Philippines also has many larger islands, such as Samar and Leyte in the east, Bannai in the northwest, Negros in the southwest, and Cebu and Bohol in the center.

On the map of the Philippines, many place names seem to be directly derived from Spanish place names. Examples include San Jose de Buenavista on the island of Bannay, General Santos City on the southern tip of Mindanao, and more interestingly, a small city in northeastern Mindanao called Madrid. There are also multiple Santa Cruzes on Luzon, as well as San Fernando, Santiago, Rosario, San Carlos, Lopez, and other place names. In fact, even the name of the country, "Philippines", was given by the Spaniards.

The Philippines was once colonized by Spain, and the name "Philippines" has strong colonial overtones. As a result, a significant number of Filipinos want to change the name of the country, and in February 2019, the Philippines planned to change the name to "Maharlika", meaning "Nobleman" or "Free Man".

The Philippines has historically suffered under the rule of three countries. in 1898, the Spanish-American War broke out and Spain ceded the Philippines to the U.S. In 1942, Japan occupied the Philippines in the Pacific War. on July 4, 1946, the U.S. agreed to Philippine independence, which coincidentally also happens to be U.S. Independence Day.

After the defeat of Japan, the United States once again took control of the Philippines. On July 4, 1946, the United States agreed to Philippine independence. On this day, the United States also celebrated Independence Day.
