Vietnam faced Australia in the second round of Group B matches in the third phase of the Asian qualifying round (Round of 12) at its home stadium in My Thanh. The match resulted in a narrow 0-1 loss for Vietnam. In the 43rd minute, Australia scored their first national team goal with the only shot on goal in the match, assisted by Hrstic and scored by Grant. Vietnam lost their second consecutive match and have no points to show for it, while Australia won all two matches, accumulating six points and shutting out their opponents.
In the first round of matches, Vietnam fell 1-3 to Saudi Arabia on the road, while Australia edged out China with a 3-0 thrashing. In the latest FIFA rankings, Vietnam is ranked 92nd and 13th in Asia, while Australia is ranked 35th and 3rd in Asia. For Vietnam, the starting lineup was changed from the first round, with Dang Van Linh, Nguyen Phong Hung Vi, and Bui Chin Dung replacing Bui Tan Truong, Vu Van Thanh, and Duy Vi Manh (who were suspended due to a red card), while for Australia, Smith and McGrory replaced Biech and Boyle.

In the 27th minute, Nguyen Phong Hong Vi took consecutive shots from the left side of the arc that were twice blocked by Grant, one of which was suspected to be a handball, but Qatari referee Kassim did not award Vietnam a penalty after VAR intervened.
In the 34th minute, Nguyen Chinh Linh took a long shot from 35 meters out that was easily deflected by Ryan.
Hrstic gave Australia the lead in the 43rd minute when he crossed a diagonal pass from the left to the back post and Grant headed home from the right corner of the penalty area. This was Grant's 15th game for the national team and his personal first goal for the national team. Notably, it was also Australia's only shot on goal in the match.
In the 61st minute, Pan Wende took a shot from 30 meters out that goalkeeper Ryan went down and parried away.
In the 87th minute, Duke headed the ball in from the left side, but was offside and the goal was disallowed.
After a fierce battle, Vietnam finally lost to Australia with a score of 0-1.
