Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast's Beacon, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent hot streak. He asserted that Welbeck's firepower has clearly surpassed that of any other striker in United's squad, and was even convinced that United had made a mistake in letting him go. Roy Keane, on the other hand, was cold and refuted Neville's opinion, saying that the player's brilliant performances since his departure were not enough to justify his retention in the first place.
Neville did not back down from his conviction that Welbeck would be an indispensable part of the squad if United were to expand to a 24-man squad and retain five or six strikers. But Keane scoffed at the idea, pointing out that players may shine outside of United, but that doesn't mean they're ready for the challenge of playing for the Red Devils. In a war of words between the former United stars, each side has its own version of the story, and the argument is getting more and more heated.
