Diego Fran: A Uruguayan Legend on the Field

Fran made his international debut in 2002, when he showed off his magic shot in the World Cup, contributing a crucial goal for Uruguay. In the Copa América, he even equalized with a spectacular overhead kick, but missed a penalty kick and missed out on the title.

A stalwart of the Uruguayan team since the Copa América, Fran scored a hat-trick against Peru in 2008 to help Uruguay qualify for the World Cup.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Fran shone and helped Uruguay reach the quarterfinals. Although Uruguay eventually finished third, Fran's performance has gone down in history. He scored five goals in seven games, tying him with Muller, Villa, and Sneijder for the goal scoring title. He became the first player to score three goals from outside the penalty area in a single World Cup and won the World Cup Ballon d'Or.

Fran again helped Uruguay win the 2011 Copa América.In 2015, he announced his retirement from the national team, but was present as a symbol of Uruguayan soccer at the 2017 World Cup draw.
