In 2005, Lugano helped São Paulo win the São Paulo State Primera Division, the Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup as a center back. At the end of the year, he was honored as the best defender in South America.

Moving to Turkey, Lugano joined Fenerbahce on August 21, 2006 for a transfer fee of €7.5 million, teaming up with teammate Edouard de la Serna to help the club win the title on the occasion of the centenary celebrations. In 2009, he extended his contract for another four years to continue playing for Fenerbahce.

After a mixed career that saw him land at Paris Saint-Germain in 2012 and then on loan at Malaga in Spain at the start of the following year, he landed in England at the end of his contract in 2013, joining West Bromwich, where he sadly appeared in just nine matches and scored one goal. Since then, he has played for Heggen and Pitino.

In 2016, Lugano chose to return to his homeland, returning to São Paulo, where he still continues his soccer legacy today.
