In a surprise announcement today, the soccer schedule for the Tokyo Olympics has finally been unveiled, with China's women's soccer team's opening opponent, Brazil, set for a matchup at the exotic Miyagi Stadium.
China's women's soccer team, which is in Group F, will play Brazil on July 21 at 5 p.m. local time, according to reports. Miyagi Stadium, a Miyagi Prefecture landmark devastated by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, now holds more than 49,000 spectators, and it was one of the stages for the 2002 World Cup soccer tournament.
It is worth mentioning that China's second match will also be held here, scheduled for July 24 at 5 p.m. against a Zambian team. As for the third round of the group stage, China will move to the Yokohama International Stadium to face the Netherlands on July 27 at 8:30pm. Yokohama Kokusai Stadium, a 73,237-seat behemoth, has been the site of sporting events in Japan and Asia since its opening in 1998, and was the venue for the 2002 World Cup final.
The Tokyo Olympics women's soccer tournament features 12 top teams competing in three groups. According to the rules of the competition, the top team from each group and the two best third-place finishers will advance to the knockout stage together.
