Wang Frost Interview: Women's Soccer Preparation and Olympic Prospects

Interview with Wang Frost: Uncovering China's Women's Soccer Preparations and Olympic Dreams

In a recent CCTV face-to-face program, Chinese women's soccer star Wang Frost talked about her growth and the hardships of preparing for the Olympics.

Talking about the preparation process, Wang Frost revealed, "There was not a single class in training that did not run more than 10,000 meters, and every player clenched their teeth and insisted."

Recalling the game that eliminated the South Korean women's soccer team, Wang Frost lamented, "I cried at the end of the game, and at that moment I felt like I was finally relieved. After returning home from Paris, there was a lot of skepticism, and I was especially happy at that moment to score a goal in a big game and help the team get a ticket to the Olympics. Because when it comes to overtime, it's all about physical fitness, I can punch you out, punch you until you're exhausted, you can't run, and we've always believed that even when it's 0-2, we can still beat you guys, thanks to the 130 days of training we've had."

Wang Frost also revealed that the training sessions, each with a heart rate belt and running data monitoring, running distance are more than 10,000 meters, and ultimately the stinging pain in the knee joint is unbearable. But she said, "Each of our players can only grit their teeth and go to the top, because stopping a training session, we may not be able to keep up with the next amount of training, so we must grit our teeth and insist."

During the epidemic, the Olympic women's soccer qualifiers became fragmented, and Wuhan-born Wang Frost suffered the closure of Wuhan. She trained at home, but the intensity fell far short of Jia's guidance. Talking about the Chinese women's soccer team's trip to Australia during the Chinese New Year, Wang Frost said, "From the anxious and impatient mindset before, I slowly became accepting. Very envious of my teammates, against Australia we got the goal first, I screamed up at home, to the final eighty minutes or so by the extinction of the tie, I lost my voice."

Talking about the preparation for the game with South Korea, Wang Frost recalled, "Jia guide said the most words is do not have a burden, even if the responsibility for the loss is also ours, you just need to show their own training content is enough."

Wang Frost also shared her own experience of growing up, saying, "As a Chinese, the sense of honor of representing your country, you will be very eager and cherish such an opportunity. To put it cruelly, it may only be through the stage of the national team that people can see you. Normally at the club, the women's soccer league doesn't have that many broadcasts, and there aren't that many people there to see you live. Maybe a dozen or two dozen a game, maybe all relatives and friends, these years it will be better, there may be fans arrange more than a hundred people to come to the scene, so you will feel that playing on the field is especially empty, the field is more to hear the players' voices."

For the Olympics, Wang Frost is full of expectations and believes that women's soccer can make a breakthrough.

Talking about her experience of staying in France, Wang Frost said: "I don't know French, and my English wasn't good enough at that time, so I felt that English was the easiest after I got in touch with it. The first feeling of coming to France is loneliness, teammates are also strangers, and they are all European players, you can't speak the language, the cultural differences are also big, we are not living in a collective, after training, they all have their own lives. I think they are very simple, you conquer them with your actions and strength, they will think you are great."

However, Wang Frost had a mediocre performance at the 2019 Women's International Cup. She said, "When you can't help the team on the pitch, not even a nice assist, you are desperate. Shine abroad and let others know you now, my progress alone can't change the team, what our national team needs to give more than others, through long-term efforts to fight against other national teams."

After the International Cup, Wang Frost returned to the national team after her early termination of contract with Paris. She said, "I really didn't want to play soccer much during that time, and I felt that I had lost the joy of playing soccer. At that time Jia guide helped me a lot to help me adjust my mentality, he definitely understood that I was very hurt, and he kept encouraging me to spur me on and give me confidence, so that I could rediscover my love for soccer."
