The dust has settled on the league groupings. However, what is slightly different from the widely rumored version of the grouping is that the Tianjin Jinmen Tigers and Guangzhou City have swapped camps, a change that has allowed the three strongest teams in the Guangdong region - Guangzhou, Guangzhou City, and Shenzhen - to reside in their hometowns in the Guangzhou region.

The Stage 1 groupings are still based on the rankings from the 2020 season in a classic serpentine arrangement. The tournament will be played in two popular regions, Guangzhou and Suzhou.

The specific groupings of the serpentine arrangement are as follows:

Group A: 1 Guangzhou, 4 Shandong Taishan, 5 Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic, 8 Henan Songshan Longmen, 9 Tianjin Jinmen Tiger, 12 Shenzhen, 13 Qingdao, 16 Cangzhou Lion

Group B: 2 Beijing Guoan, 3 Shanghai Harbor, 6 Shanghai Shenhua, 7 Hebei, 10 Guangzhou City, 11 Dalian People, 14 Changchun Yatai, 15 Wuhan

Originally, Guangzhou and Guangzhou City would have belonged to different groups according to this grouping. In order to take into account commercial factors such as ticket sales, the FA finally decided to make an adjustment, i.e. Tianjin Jinmen Tigers were "moved" from Group A to Group B, while Guangzhou City was "moved" from Group B to Group A. The change allowed the three Guangdong powerhouses to gather in Guangzhou. This change allowed the three big players in Guangdong to gather in Guangzhou.
