Back on August 11, 2008, a thrilling final was played in Paris. Brazil lost 0-1 to the United States, but the outcome of the match was the subject of much controversy.
USA's Swanson scored a controversial goal in the 57th minute. although Swanson was not offside when she scored, her teammate Smith appeared to be offside and ran towards the goal before Swanson. the VAR system didn't intervene, but the moment became the focus of the post-game debate.
"It was offside ball! Smith clearly ran towards the ball."
One Brazilian fan said indignantly, "Offside seems to exist in every country around the globe, but the Olympics favors the United States."
"Why is VAR not providing images?VAR is only focusing on Brazil's goals!?"
He went on to question, "We can protest to FIFA and the IOC that this was clearly an illegal goal."
He added helplessly, "Despite that, we have nothing to complain about. We won medals and the men's soccer team didn't even qualify for the Olympics."
The silver medal was nothing short of miraculous for a team that crashed out of the group stage in 2028.
"Marta is clearly more influential than Neymar" (the bickering among Brazilian fans in the building goes on and on)
