In the golden age of the Chinese Super League (CSL), many soccer superstars have come and gone, with Guangzhou Evergrande, the bright pearl of the CSL, shining especially brightly. In a recent interview with the media, Jackson Martinez, the former striker of Guangzhou Evergrande, the former champion of the Chinese Super League, revealed that he is ready to restart his soccer career. If Martinez is able to make his comeback, it will be his return to the green field after three years of retirement.
Prior to that, Martinez announced his retirement in early 2021 due to an ankle injury. However, in recent years, rumors have been swirling about his comeback. In a recent interview with Colombian outlet LARED, Martinez finally revealed the latest developments in his comeback.
Martinez revealed, "I almost joined Medellín Independiente this year, but ended up calling it quits due to poor health. Now, I feel that I have fully recovered and am in good physical condition. It is true that several clubs have extended an olive branch to me, inviting me to return to the field. I will seriously consider these contracts. Of course, the first priority is to ensure that my family is happy. If any invitation takes me away from my family, then I will not consider it."
In fact, Martinez had the chance to make a comeback at least twice in the past two years, but failed to do so for various reasons. However, this time, Martinez revealed that he has multiple offers in his hands, which is more credible than the rumors of the past two comebacks. Obviously, after more than two years of rest, the ankle problems that have plagued him for so long are no longer an obstacle.
Martinez was once the most valuable asset of Guangzhou Evergrande. At the beginning of 2016, he joined Evergrande with a transfer fee of more than 42 million euros, which once set a new transfer record for players in the Chinese Super League. However, in that crazy transfer season, the record set by Martinez was soon broken by Teixeira with a price of 50 million euros. Although Martinez's performance and number of appearances at Evergrande did not meet expectations, he is still regarded by some fans as a representative of the "water goods superstar" in the history of the Chinese Super League, even though he won the Chinese Super League title for the team during his time at Guangzhou Evergrande.
