The news came in on August 7, 2023, when England's women's football team beat Nigeria on penalties in the Women's World Cup 1/8 final to head into the last eight. The match culminated in Lauren James unfortunately being shown a red card for a mis-step on an opponent. After the match, teammate Carter bravely stepped forward and spoke up for Sister James.
"Lauren, despite her youth, has extraordinary talent. We can all sense her potential, but as with all of us, she has much to sharpen. Frankly, I didn't witness that one encounter, so I'm not at liberty to comment too much. But she was surrounded by her mentors and friends, and she was tough enough to redeem herself. I believe that Lauren is capable of coming out of the shadows, and at the same time, she needs to learn from this experience.
However, social media is like a double-edged sword. If left unchecked, I fear it could lead to irreversible consequences. Fortunately, Lauren is surrounded by the support of her many friends and teammates to help her get through this. Our team needs the same kind of unity and cohesion to tackle challenges together."
